Zumaya expected to miss half of 08 season after shoulder surgery
Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya underwent surgery Wednesday on his throwing shoulder and will be out until at least the midpoint of the 2008 season, the team announced today in a news release.
The procedure, an AC joint reconstruction, took place at the Scripps Clinic in San Diego. The right-hander was injured moving personal items during the California wildfires, the team said.
Zumaya will rest his shoulder for the next six weeks before he will be able to begin an active rehabilitation program. He is expected to begin a strengthening program in three months, and it is anticipated he will begin a throwing program in four months.
Dave Dombrowski, the Tigers’ president and general manager, will answer questions about Zumaya in a conference call with reporters at 4 p.m. today.
