Tigers release Jacque Jones; Sheffield to LF

In one change to their everyday lineup, the Tigers announced today that they have cut outfielder Jacque Jones and purchased the contract of Matt Joyce from Triple-A Toledo.

Jones, who was designated for assignment, batted .165 in 24 games as the team’s primary leftfielder.

Joyce played impressively in big-league camp this spring and batted .299 with five home runs and 21 RBIs at Toledo. He has never played in the major leagues.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland then announced his revised lineup, which includes Gary Sheffield in leftfield. It appears that Sheffield will now start in left several times per week.
