Tigers’ brass sticks by Jones
Given the absence of another proven closer — Joel Zumaya and Fernando Rodney are on the disabled list, and the ineffective Jose Mesa was released this month — Leyland has little choice but to place his faith in Jones.
Club officials might find help via a trade, but closers are in short supply across the majors.
“A lot of clubs need relievers, and there are not a lot available,” president/general manager Dave Dombrowski said Wednesday.
Leyland spoke in support of Jones on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after Jones told reporters, “I totally blew this game,” in the aftermath of a 9-6 loss to Texas.
