Kenny Rogers hasn’t had many pleasant memories of Yankee Stadium since the Bronx Bombers traded him at the end of the 1997 season. But he’ll head out of the old ballpark with a win.
Yankee Stadium had chewed him up for 24 earned runs on 40 hits over 22 innings in four starts over the last decade, and he hadn’t pitched here since 2004. He had several chances to fall to the same fate against the Yankees on Tuesday night, but by lasting six innings with two runs surrendered, he allowed Detroit’s early lead to stick for a 6-4 victory.
