The 42-year-old starting pitcher coming off surgery finally gave up a run. The 38-year-old slugger ran his way into one and drove in two more. For all the talk about the Tigers’ young talent, the oldest pitcher and oldest hitter became the stars on Thursday.
Six days ago, Kenny Rogers made his season debut, shut out the Braves for six innings and later said he didn’t feel very comfortable on the mound. As for his comfort level after six innings of one-run ball in Thursday’s 5-2 win over the Rangers at Comerica Park, well, he’s getting there.
“It’s a good start, but it’s only a start,” he said. “I’ve still got work to do and a lot of improvement to make.”
