Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good.
The Tigers found themselves on the losing end of that maxim on Thursday afternoon, as the White Sox managed a 4-3 walk-off victory at U.S. Cellular Field despite a strong pitching performance from Justin Verlander.
Verlander allowed only three runs on three hits in seven-plus innings, but he saw a late lead slip away on a sight all too familiar to Detroit fans — a pitcher making a critical error.
Zach Miner threw a sacrifice bunt attempt down the right-field line in the bottom of the ninth inning, allowing Scott Podsednik to score the game-winning run from first base. It was Miner’s second loss and blown save in the last three days.
