Tigers 2, White Sox 3 (9/29/07)

Don’t suggest to Jim Leyland that it doesn’t mean much.

Neither a playoff spot nor a batting title rode on Saturday night’s result. The first part was decided a few days ago, and American League batting leader Magglio Ordonez had the night off. Yet if the Tigers manager expects his players to play out the season with their full effort, he’s going to expect the same from himself.

He has admitted the intensity level can be different, but it didn’t look that way in the ninth inning Sunday.

“If you want to get the season over, go home,” Leyland said after being ejected in Saturday’s 3-2 walk-off loss to the White Sox. “Play without the umpires tomorrow. I’m tired of that nice-guy stuff.”
