The undercard trumped the main event in Friday night’s Verlander/Santana showdown.
Most of the 42,361 fans in attendance at Comerica Park came to see the matchup between Justin Verlander, the reigning American League Rookie of the Year, and Johan Santana, the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner.
That matchup was good, but the one between Verlander and Joe Mauer was better.
Mauer took a 96-mph fastball from Verlander over the left-field fence for his first career grand slam on a full count in the fifth inning and gave the Twins a 6-0 lead. That was more than enough support for Santana and the rest of the Twins in an 11-1 win.
