Andrew Miller had only one pitch working Wednesday night — his fastball. At the Major League level, that rarely works.
Miller lasted just two-thirds of an inning, his shortest start of his career, and allowed five runs while taking the loss in a 5-0 defeat to Kansas City at Kauffman Stadium. Miller, who has struggled for nearly two months, may lose his spot in the rotation.
“When a hitter knows with a pretty good certainty that a fastball is coming, they are going to be able to execute,” Miller said. “It was pretty embarrassing. I just kind of take it and get over it as quickly as I can with whatever the next opportunity is.”
The defeat dropped the Tigers 4 1/2 games behind Cleveland in the American League Central, their largest deficit since June 1. Detroit is 10-17 in August and has won just two series this month.
