Sheffield’s suspension reduced to 2 games
Tigers outfielder Gary Sheffield said after today’s 5-2 victory over Texas that he will be suspended for Saturday and Sunday’s games against Minnesota.
The suspension — handed down on June 1, the day after he allegedly tossed the bat handle at umpire Greg Gibson in a game against Cleveland — was reduced from three games.
After a morning phone call with Bob Waton, MLB’s vice president of operations who handles discipline, Sheffield allowed the Tigers’ personnel to finalize the outcome just before game time.
