Tigers manager Jim Leyland said in a Tuesday radio interview with Free Press columnist Mitch Albom that he will not be given a contract extension this off-season, a development that could bring uncertainty to the 2009 season and add complexity to the team’s search for a pitching coach.
Leyland, who is already signed through next year, told WJR-AM (760) that he is “disappointed†to not have a deal for 2010. He discussed his status with team president and general manager Dave Dombrowski prior to the end of the season.
“I have not been extended,†Leyland told Albom, “and I’m not gonna be extended. … There was some sense of an offer that I did not accept.
