Leyland to meet Monday about contract extension

Jim Leyland will meet on Monday with general manager Dave Dombrowski, and Leyland said today he hopes the Tigers will extend his contract through 2009.

Leyland’s contract hasn’t really been an issue, because there’s never been a question that he would remain. But it would make sense to extend it now, because Leyland would otherwise enter 2008 in the final year of a contract.

Leyland said he wants to manage the Tigers “for a while,” but he also said he wouldn’t want anything more than a one-year extension at this time. Leyland will turn 63 in December.
