Every team wants to get off to a good start in any game, but especially if your opponent played the night before — as Tampa Bay did in a bad loss to Chicago on Wednesday.
So the Red Wings focused on a good start, which they had, and it carried them to a 4-2 victory.
The start set the tone for the Wings. They outshot the Lightning 17-1 in the first period. The Wings throttled Vincent Lecavalier, the league’s leading scorer, keeping him off the scoresheet and limiting him to three shots.
