Chauncey Billups was hoping to redeem himself in front of his hometown crowd. J.R. Smith made it unnecessary.
Billups’ foul put Smith on the line with 6.5 seconds left and a chance to tie the game, but Smith missed two of three foul shots, allowing the Detroit Pistons to escape with a 98-93 win over the Denver Nuggets on Monday night.
“I feel awful,” said Smith, a 76-percent free-throw shooter. “I just missed.”
