Tiger Stadium gets another stay of execution

The Detroit City Council has granted Tiger Stadium a stay of execution.

The council voted 5-3 on Tuesday to reject a resolution that would have authorized the immediate demolition of the historic ballpark.

Crews began tearing down the stadium in June. A corner of the ballpark has been left standing while a preservation group tries to raise money to turn it into a sports museum.

Two 2010 commits already in, another likely coming for U-M

The commitment of Orlando Fla. Dr. Phillips junior wide receiver Ricardo Miller 6-3, 203 pounds to Michigan last Monday kicked off a week of good news involving the class of 2010 for the Wolverines.

Lions will scrap no-huddle offense

After one ineffective week of operation, the Detroit Lions are apparently going to scrap their no-huddle offense.

Receiver Roy Williams didn’t appear thrilled with this recent development.

“We reached for something and it didn’t work. So we get rid of it because it didn’t work,'’ Williams said today. “It is what it is. It doesn’t matter whether I agree or disagree. A lot of things don’t work but we don’t throw it out.'’

Curry: Johnson is Pistons’ starting power forward

Calling him a “welcome addition,” coach Michael Curry made official Saturday what he’s long been hinting at — Amir Johnson, as of now, is the Pistons’ starting power forward.

“Amir does things without having to have the ball,” Curry said. “He’s able to pick up baskets through his activity, by running the floor and playing off the other four guys. He does all the intangible things, and through that he’s able to create offensive opportunities for himself.”

How long Johnson holds onto the spot is completely up to him.

Shock 76, Silver Stars 60 (10/5/08)

Katie Smith missed almost the entire second quarter because of foul trouble. Cheryl Ford has been out since the summer with a knee injury. And the Detroit Shock had to play in a college gym half the size of their regular home court.

In the end, none of it mattered.

The Shock overcame all of that in winning their third WNBA title in six seasons on Sunday, beating the San Antonio Silver Stars 76-60 in Game 3.

Lions 7, Bears 34 (10/5/08)

Kyle Orton looked like a star against the Detroit Lions.

Again.

Orton set career highs in yards passing, completions and quarterback rating while throwing two touchdowns to lead the Chicago Bears to a 34-7 win over Detroit on Sunday.

He was 24-of-34 for 334 yards and had a 121.4 rating, improving to 3-0 against Detroit.

Like many NFL players, Orton loves playing the Lions.

“Yeah, I do for some reason,” he acknowledged.
