On the offensive: Lions take MSU’s Stanton
OK, now the Lions have taken Michigan State quarterback Drew Stanton in the second round (43rd overall). I’m not surprised they took Stanton. I am surprised how they did it.
The Lions have a lot of holes on defense. I didn’t think they would use their first two picks on offense.
It’s hard to find fault with taking wide receiver Calvin Johnson second overall. He was the best player on the board — a rare package of talent and attitude.
But why trade the second-rounder (No. 34) to Buffalo for a second-rounder (No. 43) and third-rounder (No. 74)? The Lions must have felt that there was a good pool of talent later — president Matt Millen said Wednesday the meat of the draft was from the second round to the middle rounds — and they could get a quarterback and some defenders a little farther back.
