The future of the Red Wings’ defensive corps is here.By trading veteran Mike Commodore Monday afternoon, the Wings have opened the door for Brendan Smith, who has been recalled from Grand Rapids.
In his first professional season, the 22-year-old Smith has 10 goals and 22 assists in 47 games for Grand Rapids.
“Once we got Kyle Quincey we really want Brendan Smith to play,” Wings general manager Ken Holland told DetroitRedWings.com. “He’s really played good in the American Hockey League, it’s kind of hard to keep Mike Commodore around here when Brendan Smith is ahead of him, so we made a decision.” (NHL.com)

Scott Sizemore was the Tigers second baseman of the future a year and half ago, as president/general manager Dave Dombrowski said after the 2009 season. On Friday he became part of the solution for the Tigers relief help of the present.
Detroits deal, sending Sizemore to Oakland for left-handed reliever David Purcey, was very much a here-and-now trade, as Dombrowski indicated when he talked with reporters. The team doesnt have a clear-cut replacement at second base at the moment, more like a group to platoon that now includes the just-recalled Danny Worth. But the Tigers felt they needed to do something about a bullpen that has been bleeding runs lately and doesnt have a clear seventh-inning order.
Dontrelle Willis has a new home — coincidentally, where the left-hander just bought a new home. The Tigers sent him to the D-backs on Tuesday night in exchange for right-hander Billy Buckner.
Dontrelle Willis Tigers tenure is over. The Tigers announced Saturday they are designating his contract for assignment to make room for Max Scherzer on the 25-man roster in time for Scherzers scheduled start Sunday. From there, the Tigers technically will have 10 days to try to trade Willis or see if another team claims him on waivers. Neither option seems likely.
