The Tigers announced after the game that Wednesday’s starting pitcher, Adam Wilk, was optioned to the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens after making just his third start with the team. Right-handed reliever Brayan Villarreal was recalled from the Mud Hens. (Bless You Boys)
Weber has been exclusively a starter since making one relief appearance in rookie ball in 2008, but will be in the bullpen for Detroit. He went 5-11 with a 5.65 ERA for Triple-A Toledo last year, but has won his first two starts of 2012, giving up one run in 12 innings.
To make room for Weber, the Tigers sent reliever Daniel Schlereth to Toledo. Schlereth has a 10.29 ERA in six appearances this season. (FOX Sports Detroit)
The Tigers will use the All-Star break to add an extra reliever for the next couple of weeks. Detroit optioned Armando Galarraga to Triple-A Toledo after his start Tuesday night and called up sinkerballer Robbie Weinhardt from the Mud Hens to add to the bullpen.
Galarraga’s demotion, team president and general manager Dave Dombrowski emphasized, is a temporary one. The plan calls for him to rejoin the Tigers and start on July 20 against Texas. They’ll have an extra reliever for the rest of the week once Weinhardt arrives on Wednesday. That means an eight-man bullpen for this weekend’s three-game series against the Twins at Comerica Park.
The Tigers called up left-hander Daniel Schlereth from Triple-A Toledo on Friday morning, making him available for the series opener against the Mariners later that night.
The move corresponds with the club optioning left-hander Fu-Te Ni to the Minors after Wednesday’s game.
Schlereth posted a 2.83 ERA, striking out 45 and walking 26, in 35 innings spanning 28 relief outings for the Mud Hens. During his rookie season in 2009, the 24-year-old – acquired as part of the three-team deal that sent Edwin Jackson to the Diamondbacks and Curtis Granderson to the Yankees – posted a 5.89 ERA in 21 appearances for Arizona.
