It was clear the Detroit Tigers were going to bring up catcher Bryan Holaday from Triple-A Toledo…In order to make room for Holaday, the Tigers needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. They did so by designating third-string catcher Omir Santos for assignment.
By designating Santos for assignment, the Tigers also cleared a spot on the active roster. They elected to fill the spot by recalling right-handed reliever Jose Ortega from Toledo. (MLive)
Holaday is expected to arrive in Detroit on Wednesday and will be in uniform before the team’s second game against Cleveland, the Toledo Blade reported late Tuesday…If the report is accurate, it’s likely catcher Alex Avila will be headed to the 15-day disabled list…Avila exited Tuesday’s game due to reoccurring tightness in his right hamstring. He underwent an MRI, but the results were not immediately made available. (MLive)

Right-handed pitcher Collin Balester will remain in the Detroit Tigers organization after he went unclaimed in the waiver process.
The Tigers announced this afternoon that they have outrighted Balester to Triple-A Toledo. Balester cleared waivers after the Tigers designated him for assignment last week.
“I’m just going to work hard and be ready to come back when they need me again,” Balester said this afternoon via text message. “I’m excited to still be with the Tigers.” (MLive)
Hours after the Tigers made one roster move to get a fresh arm for the bullpen, they made another one Thursday morning. After Tigers coaches and front-office people met in manager Jim Leylands office Thursday morning, they announced they were optioning Thad Weber back to Triple-A Toledo.
Taking his place will be right-hander Luke Putkonen, who was not on the 40-man roster. The Tigers purchased his contract, using the spot that opened up when Al Alburquerque was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. (detroittigers.com)
