Last year, the Lions opted not to extend a restricted free agent tender to running back Kevin Smith, one of the lone bright spots during that dismal 0-16 season of 2008. Injuries forced the Lions to bring him back in November, and in his second game Smith reeled off 201 total yards and three touchdowns.
This year, the Lions didn’t wait until November to get him under contract. Per a league source, Smith has agreed to terms on a one-year contract. (NBC Sports)

Detroit Lions running back Kevin Smith will undergo thumb surgery Thursday and miss Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.
Smith suffered a thumb injury late in the first half of last Sunday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills. He missed three games earlier this year while recovering from 2009 knee surgery but has served as Jahvid Best’s primary backup since early October.
Receiver Calvin Johnson said Monday he was “ready to get going” after missing the Lions’ last two games with a right knee injury. And he appeared to be going at full speed Wednesday as the Lions began preparations for this week’s game at Seattle. Johnson didn’t appear limited during position-group drills in the initial 30-minute portion of practice that is open to the media.
But running back Kevin Smith, who left Sunday’s loss to St. Louis with a shoulder injury, was sitting out Wednesday. He appeared to be the only player not participating at least on a limited basis.
