Report: Tigers, Anibal Sanchez agree to terms

The Detroit Tigers will re-sign right-handed pitcher Anibal Sanchez, according to multiple national baseball writers.

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale later tweeted that the sides have agreed at five years and $80 million, and several other reporters confirmed the report within minutes.

Talk of a Tigers vs. Chicago Cubs bidding war for Sanchez started Thursday night.

If the numbers are true, Sanchez will be making more money than ace Justin Verlander, who signed a five-year, $79.5-million contract three years ago. (Detroit Free Press)

I don’t like it. This makes Doug Fister and Max Scherzer – far superior pitchers to Sanchez – all but unsignable and severely hampers the ability to re-sign Verlander. Sanchez is now making more money than Verlander and he is nowhere near the same caliber pitcher. This signing has thrown a crazy wrench into placing values on pitchers.

NO. This is bad. Too much.

We would’ve been better keeping Porcello and not tieing our hands when it comes to resigning the other (BETTER) pitchers coming up on free agency. Now I’m worried we will no be able to bring back Scherzer and to a lesser extent Fister.
