Newly acquired outfielder Johnny Damon wasn’t offered the two-year deal he wanted from the Tigers, but the 36-year-old had plenty of other reasons to sign with Detroit — including the chance to ditch his clean-cut image for a more unkempt look that seems to suit him better.
For the past four seasons, Damon has had to adhere to George Steinbrenner’s strict dress code and grooming edict in New York. Damon, who was notorious for his shoulder-length hair and thick beard in Boston, cautiously ditched his cave-man-like appearance after joining the Yankees in 2005.
But the All-Star left-handed veteran, who signed with Detroit in late February, hinted Friday that his infamous beard might make a return this season.
